Giant Track is one of three peaks that make up a ridge or wall situated north to south and slightly out of the Park's boundaries. Many of the granite peaks in this area have potholes, created by the erosion of rain, ice, and chemical reactions in the softer parts of the granite. Giant Track Mountain has two such holes at the top, six feet deep by twelve feet wide. The Indians knew this and thought of them as the steps of giants.
It was earlier called Sheep Mountain, but the native story caused the Colorado Geologic Board to change it.
This was the place that Bierstadt sketched his famous rendition of Longs Peak in 1876, now hanging in the Denver Public Library.#
